May 5 — “Loving Our Hindu Neighbours” Our presenters will describe, in broad strokes, what it means to be Hindu. Pundit Jigar Goswami will share the basic tenets of Hinduism, and Ganga Dakshinamurti and Manju Lodha will represent some of the variations that exist within the way of life that is Hindu, drawing on their own backgrounds and experiences.

Pundit Jigar Goswami is a priest at the Hindu Society of Manitoba. He came from India with his family five years ago. He lives at the Hindu temple and is always available to help everyone. His calm, kind manner is appreciated by the congregation. He will recite some Sanskrit Shlokas, which are the core of Hinduism, and will translate them into English.

Ganga Dakshinamurti is a retired academic librarian. She and her husband moved to Winnipeg in 1965. Ganga holds many educational credentials including Masters in Sanskrit and Indian Philosophy from India, Masters in Library Science and a PhD in Human Resources Development from U of M. Along with her husband and their two daughters, Ganga has been active in cultural and communal services in Winnipeg and Canada at large. She has received numerous academic awards as well as community-based and cultural awards. Ganga serves at the Hindu temples in Winnipeg by looking after the Dakshinamurti Academy of Hindu Studies, established by her and her husband.

Manju Lodha came to Canada in 1971 from Rajasthan, India. She is a beloved Winnipeg-based artist, a painter who has recently branched into video making, photography and singing. As a member of the Manitoba Association for Multicultural Education, she served for years as a valuable resource to the broader community. Closer to home, she collaborated with Ray Dirks on the Leap of Faith Project at Mennonite Heritage Centre. For this, they were jointly awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for the Advancement of Interreligious Understanding in 2018.

May 12 – “Loving Our Sikh Neighbours” Guest presenter Dr. Mohinder Singh Nijjar will briefly describe the history of the Sikh religion, principals of Sikhism, their Holy Granth Sahib containing verses of saints belonging to other religions, symbols identifying a follower of Sikhism, and the current status of Sikhism in the world.

May 19 – “Loving Our Buddhist Neighbours” The Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is a worldwide organization dedicated to peace, culture and education based on the humanistic philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism. Four guest presenters will take you on a historical journey of Buddhism leading up to the current practice of Global Practitioners of Nichiren Buddhism in the 21st century. There will be a PowerPoint presentation including a brief video. Two of the presenters who are newer practitioners, will include personal perspectives on their faith journeys.
