October 26 Worship Focus

Our worship at Bethel continues a year-long series working through the biblical story from beginning to end, following the Narrative Lectionary. This Sunday takes us to King Solomon and the building of the temple as a house for the Lord. Our texts in 1 Kings 5:1-5 and 1 Kings 8:1-13 present this as a cause for celebration, the culmination of what Israel has been waiting for ever since the exodus and the wilderness wanderings. But other voices in the broader biblical narrative offer some cautions to seeing Solomon’s legacy as an unqualified success. As we enter into the text and the majesty of what Solomon has built, we also want to ask together what it is that we are building, individually and in our shared life together at Bethel.
